Hi,
There is one type of show that is largely missing from all old time radio formats. It is the light comedy/ dram show. Such as Grand Central Station, Curtain Time, Grand Margue, Stars over Hollywood, Brownstone Theater, Central Hospital and alike. Several of these shows were on for many years, played on different networks, had different sponsors and etc, Yet there are relatively few shows available anywhere.
Good example - Grand Central Station - ran for many years. Only about 4/5 shows available anywhere.
Does anyone know why or have any opinion?

| Some are no doubt owned by groups like Radio Spirits and some shows weren't really preserved like others were so those few we have today may be all that's left of what they produced. Remember even Hollywood was guilty of destroying old material after a while. They would burn old film stock to make room for new movies in their vaults. something similar probably happened to many OTR programs. |

| For most of its "golden age" radio was seen as a disposable medium. Shows were regarded as having no value once they were broadcast. that's why many shows were never copyrighted and are now in the public domain. Also, audiences/fans didn't really have the means to do their own off-air recordings until after radio's golden age was pretty much over. Really, we're lucky to have what we've got. |
