I recently read about Rocky Jordan in Dunning's On The Air It's one of those shows I've seen on the Internet but never bothered listening to.

So this past weekend, I thought I'd slip into Cairo and see what was up with the Cafe Tambourine.

All in all, not a bad series. I've enjoyed the ten hours of episodes I've listened to thus far. A lot of you may have checked this series out already but it was new to me.

The Casablanca influence cannot be understated but doesn't detract from the series as a whole...not as much as the name Rocky Jordan does. And Jack Moyle's spot on Humphrey Bogart sound is frightneing. It's almost easy to picture Bogey in the roll.

The stories vary from episode to episode, of course. Some have been really good (Desert Betrayal) to fair (Make-Up Man) The music and sound of the series lend a certain amount of realism to it...or at least verisimilitude. If not realistic, at least believable.

The stable of CBS actors used throughout is evident and only lends a similarity to Gerald Mohr's The Adventure of Philip Marlowe.

One question to those of you with good ears for voices - I have one but I'm stumped on this one - who is that playing Cairo police chief Sam? I know I know who that is but I've yet to come across an episode that lists any cast other than Jack Moyles.

If you haven't listened to Rocky Jordan, you might find a pleasant adventure series to enjoy.

I finished the show's run and have to say this is going to go in my list of favorite new discoveries.
I was disappointed in the show's later run...not by the series itself but rather by the shift to organ music (?), though at least latter episodes did have a cast recap, which the earlier episodes lacked. Additionally, and I'm not sure why, but the sound qualiity of the later episodes is actually slightly worse than the early ones. Usually not so bad to make them unlistenable but some required more active listening than I can usually devote.

All in all, Rocky Jordan was a pleasant surprise and one I'll probably listen to repeatedly.

I see the RJ episodes are being posted, Brad. (Way to go Victor!)
The Man Called Jordan episodes were great...I hadn't heard any of these before. Makes me wish we had more of the serial storylines available...man, Jack Moyles sounded even more lik Bogart in the beginning.

I was thrilled to find out there were more episode available than I got the first time. I'm looking forward to spend more time in Cairo.

I enjoyed "The map of murder" so much that I just put the whole bunch of them on my Ipod. These would be good to have on a long car ride.

I've got a lot of Victor's shows uploaded so far. Still half of RJ to go and then the Gunsmoke shows. My host limits the upload bandwidth so I've had to leave the ftp program running for two days straight. If they wouldn't mess with the speed it would have only taken a couple of hours instead of days. Oh well. They offer more server space than most places so it's a fair trade-off I guess.

I competely agree, Victor. This series was a complete surprise to me...I think the name made me think it was more of a juvenile show...but I would probably have to list this as one of my favorite shows over all. I would put it on par with Philip Marlowe and Nightbeat.

Internet Archive had a lot of shows but I'm seeing a lot of episodes titles I haven't seen yet. I'm looking forward to digging into some more RJ episodes.

Does anybody know more history behind the show? I know it started as an adventure serial and became a weekly half hour but the additional audition episodes (George Raft?) raised some questions I didn't have the answers to.

I finally went to Wikipedia and checked out Jay Novello.
After I saw his face, I knew exactly who he was. (Hard to beieve he ever played Jack Packard on ILAM) Boy, he doesn't look like my mental picture of Sam Sabaaya. I picuture Sam to be a large, portly man...or am I just seeing Sallah in Raiders of the Lost Ark?

Oh, well, loving this show. This may have to go down as one of my all time favorite shows.

I love Sam Sabaaya. He's one of the coolest cops in all of OTR. And he's very specifically a muslim, which makes him a very signular character in the genre.

What I like best though, is the relationship between Sam and Jordan - unlike so many PI/cop relationships, it's never a case of "PI is so clever, cop is so stupid" that many have, or even "cop is out to get PI, just 'cuz". They have a very complex relationship of mutual respect and both are smart tough guys, and yet, Sam would arrest Jordan if he felt it was justified...

Yeah, this is one of my faves, too. Sad that a couple of the scripts were either recycled for, or recycled from (I never looked it up) Jeff Regan.
