I've been digging around on some newspapers on line. I thought you might find these articles interesting:

==================================
AUDIO: 46-02-17 574 Rochester Lost At Sea

Rochester really WAS lost at sea and was presumed dead.

===================================
AUDIO: 39-02-19 324 Carmichael, The Polar Bear
AUDIO: 39-03-12 327 Carmichael Is Sick

Carmichael the Bear was real...

==================================
AUDIO: Numerous

Mary Livngstone really had a wild sister named Babe!

==================================
AUDIO: none

Operator on Benny Show wasn't always so funny...

==================================
AUDIO: none

Jack Benny was convicted in 1939 of smuggling jewelry. He eventually had to pay a $10,000 fine

===================================
AUDIO: 43-02-21 470 Chicago - Monument for Jack

Jack had a bad cold! So bad, it made the papers...and his radio show.

===================================
AUDIO: 44-04-23 513 Dennis Leaves For the Navy

Dennis Day drafted into the Navy

Great stuff!

I'm listening to the 46-02/17 show right now to hear how they mention Rochester lost at sea on the show.

Speaking of reality and OTR, I always thought it'd be a cool idea to have a travel site dedicated to OTR. It could showcase actual places around the country that are OTR-related- IE: broadcast venues and what shows originated there, places where performers were from, and any places that exist that were locations in shows. I'd certainly like to visit the actual Pine Ridge AK. I once looked up an actual 79 Wistful Vista Street in Peoria, Illinois.

Last year, my wife and I were eating dinner at an outdoor cafe in Palm Springs California, and I noticed were were right across from the Plaza Theatre. Jack Benny, Bob Hope and others broadcast tons of shows from there back in the day; I remember Don Wilson announcing "From the Plaza Theatre in sunny Palm Springs California... the Jack Benny Show!"

It'd be cool to have a travel resource like that.

And don't forget Grover's Mill, NJ, the East Coast's answer (and precursor) to Roswell.

You know guys, that's not a bad idea at all.

Using google earth you could actually show the existing places/army camps... wow great idea!

We'll just have to concentrate on that a bit. It would make a perfect addition to my website - not ttrying to steal your idea zap, only helping/hoping to incorporate for the good of common man.

You could have links to the .kmz files for each location on google earth- awesome idea Jimbo!

I say go for it, I don't lay any claim to the idea. I think it would be an awesome resource for everyone. I'd be happy to help out with locations.

It's really not a bad idea at that.

Existing locations might be some trouble but I know Bob Hope (especially) was at different Army bases,hospitals - I'll bet they still exist.

Some of those theaters though - I dunno about that. But as soon as the blog "slows down" a bit, I will try and turn my attention to it.

It makes sense that real life was mixed into the shows back then. I mean look at Leno and Carson before him. They did much the same thing with their monologues during which they told jokes that referenced people and places that were current in the news. And as far as OTR Jack Benny isn't alone there either. On one episode of Abbott and Costello a reference is made to how Lou isn't in a funny mood that evening because of a personal tragedy in his family. His young son had just drowned in the families swimming pool. Sad
