Alka-Seltzer Time

Alka-Seltzer Time was a quarter hour show featuring Martha Tilton and Curt Massey, popular singers of the time. It had a straightforward format: It opened with the Alka-Seltzer jingle, then Tilton and Massey sung two or three songs followed by a commercial for One-a-Day Vitamins. Next came more songs, leading up to a closing ad for Alka-Seltzer. There was a minimum of snappy patter between the hosts to segue from one song to another.

Massey had a long and successful career in show business. His best-remembered work may be the theme song for the 1960s situation comedy, Petticoat Junction, which he wrote and performed. Tilton is best remembered as a vocalist with big bands in the late 1930s and 1940s; she played herself in Steve Allen's The Benny Goodman Story, which was released in 1956 (and is a quite well-done movie, by the way).

The show featured popular standards of the day, such as Don't Fence Me In, The Sunny Side of the Street, and I've Got Spurs that Jingle Jangle Jingle. After the show ended, Massey and Tilton continued their association with occasional appearances on other shows and even an album. The show, which was originally called Curt Massey Time, was syndicated on CBS and Mutual from 1949 to 1954.
