Dinah Shore

Dinah Shore was an almost constant presence on radio and later television from 1940 until 1979. After graduating from Vanderbilt University with a degree in sociology, she got a job singing on WNEW in New York. That led to a job singing with the Leo Reisman Orchestra, which in turn led to a steady gig singing on the Eddie Cantor Show, then to her own show. The shows in this collection span her radio career.

Over the course of that career, she had over 70 hit records and appeared in several movies, but the variety show, where she could mix music with humor and conversation, seemed to be her natural home. During World War II, she was a particular favorite of soldiers, because of the warm, homey atmosphere she was created on the air. Indeed, my father, who served in Europe, was the biggest Dinah Shore fan I ever knew.
