I Sustain the Wings


I Sustain the Wings aired on CBS during the latter years of World War II. It featured big band leader Glenn Miller, who had enlisted in the Army, leading the Army Air Force Training Command Band in popular tunes of the day. The show was partly morale booster and recruiting tool, as well as excellent musical entertainment.

In addition to the radio show, Glen Miller's wartime assignments including organizing musicians for service orchestras and touring the war zone to entertain and boost the morale of troops. It was on one such tour that the plane carrying Miller was lost over the English Channel in 1944; Miller is officially listed as "missing in action".

The namesake Glenn Miller Orchestra carries on Miller's legacy today, with the blessing of the Miller estate. by Tex Beneke, a former member of Miller's big band, organized it in 1946 and led it for the first four years of its existence.
